TOM TELEPHONE

080-1234 is a free telephone line for confidential advice and assistance for children and adolescents in need – Telefon za Otroke in Mladostnike (TOM) - Telephone for Children and Youth. TOM was established on the request of the Commission for Children's Rights at FYA Slovenia in 1990. From the beginning, the helpline has been providing psychosocial help for children and youth through conversation with trained counsellors. TOM is organized as a network of 15 advisory teams all over Slovenia, bringing together about 200 volunteers and consultants associated with a single telephone number 080 1234. More than 60.000 children's and young people's calls are answered every year. On the basis of these telephone calls an annual analysis of calls is elaborated, which provides a valuable indicator of actual problems young people are dealing with. The telephone number is free, it operates every day between 12 and 8 p.m. and it allows anonymous calls.
TOM is open to all young people who are facing any kind of problems and want to talk about it, because growing up itself is a turbulent period, which brings many changes into every child and young person´s needs. We offer them a safe and relaxed environment to talk about problems, needs, questions, etc.
The advisors on the TOM telephone offer young people information, encouragement, support and assistance in the form of counselling by telephone. The advisors have also to guarantee anonymity; they must be at least 19 years old and must have completed successfully a demonstration interview and the training program for telephone counseling. This program is defined by the National Program for Advisers of TOM Telephone and it is carried out by professionals which are specially trained for this kind of work.
